Volvo Ocean Race

Volvo Ocean Race is the world's largest Round-the-World sail boat race. During the nine months of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2008 and concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009, the teams will sail over 37,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm. The Race has a 35-year-old history, is formerly known as Whitbread round the World Race, and is since 2001 called Volvo Ocean Race.

During Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09, Volvo has teamed up with the World Scout Movement (WOSM) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to raise the issue of creating a better environment worldwide. The project, called Race for the Environment, involves Scouts in 7 countries on 5 continents, in doing environment activities in the Race Villages of the Volvo Ocean Race stop-overs.

Volvo is proud to support the international Scout Movement in their education activities - "Volvo Ocean Race, Volvo and Scouts have a lot in common: We believe in teamwork, good leadership and taking care of the environment. We are impressed by the Scouts dedication to environmental education and all the creative ways in which they take action" explains Magnus Blenner, Volvo Event Management.
