On November 8th, the Cape Town Waterfront was invaded by nearly 750 Scouts that took part in Race for the Environment activities. Under a bright sun, the Scouts learned about recycling and waste management, the Nature Reserves around the Western Cape, and water pollution at the Aquarium. Together with team Russia the Scouts learned more about how water pollution affects Whales and Dolphins, and got a Dolphin Diploma Card to bring home. Even cooking food was on the programme- with the help of solar energy bypassers and Scouts fried eggs and marshmallows.

At 1 pm, the Scouts gathered and got a chance to meet with skippers and team members from team Green Dragon, PUMA, Team Russia and Delta Lloyd. Questions such as "Have you ever been afraid to be attacked by a shark on the boats?", "Why are there no ladies on the boats?" and "Where do you get the money to fund your boat?" came from the audience filled with Scouts.  Ian Walker, the Skipper on the Green Dragon revealed to the audience that he used to be a scout himself, and said that "The Scout movement is not bad training for sailing around the world".

At 4 pm, Brian February, the local project manager of Race for the Environment ended the day with encouraging words to the Scouts. "We live in a beautiful world, but we all contribute to the demise it. As Scouts we can offer our little bit to change the world. If each one of us together with the rest of the Scouts of the world to change the environment, I'm sure we can make a big impact".

Despite rain, thunder and stormwinds, the Spanish Scouts invited their members to activities and fun at the Alicante Race Village. Sergio de Pedro, the local project manager and his team had planned environment activities for the Scouts. About 60 Scouts participated in obtaining the environment pass, learning more about Volvo:s environment work as well as meeting Knut Frostad, CEO of Volvo Ocean Race.

During the in-port-Race in Alicante, a group of Spanish Scouts met backstage with HRH Prince Carl-Philip of Sweden, the official guardian of Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. The Scouts welcomed the Prince to Alicante and had a short chat with him just before the price-giving ceremony. The Prince, once himself a Scout, was presented with the official Spanish Scout scarf, which he immediately put on.
